Dr. Ilona Šaltė has more than 15 years of legal experience in law firms. For the past 13 years, she has specialized in international and European Union law, with a particular focus on human rights, migration and asylum law. She has achieved important successes while representing clients at the European Court of Human Rights (T. K. and others v. Lithuania No. 55978/20 and L. B. v. Lithuania No. 38121/20), the Supreme Court of Lithuania (criminal case No. 2K-217-628/2021), where the courts have developed significant practice on asylum law issues. Attorney Ilona Šaltė was also part of the international expert team that represented the applicants in the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights. C.O.C.G and Others v. Lithuania No. 17764/22, which addresses the extremely important issue of migrant return. In addition to the aforementioned cases in the field of migration law, Ilona Šaltė has gained extensive experience in representing clients in various other legal matters during her long-term work practice: family law, labor law, inheritance law, contract law, etc.

 

In addition to legal practice, Ilona Šaltė is engaged in scientific activities. She teaches public international law, international human rights law, migration and refugee law at the Institute of International and European Union Law of the Lithuanian University of Law. In the field of international migration law, she has defended her dissertation on the topic "Problems of legal regulation of the return of illegally staying foreigners: non-refoulement principle and the return of foreigners". For the best 2022/2023 dissertation in the field of law, she was awarded the Kazimieras Motiekas Foundation scholarship. Ilona Šaltė also participates in various international and national research in the fields of migration and human rights, and conducts training both in Lithuania and abroad.
